- PRESS FIRST appears when break-even sits within two grade steps of your estimate and the result at break-even still clears roughly $20 of pressing. Pressing is not free and it is not guaranteed to move a grade.

How the break-even grade works
The submission only makes money if the slab adds more value than the whole trip costs. So the arithmetic is:
net = (slabbed value − raw value) × (1 − sale fee) − tier fee − handling − shipping
The break-even grade is simply the lowest grade where that comes out at zero or better. Above it, submitting pays. Below it, you have paid CGC for the privilege of losing money. On an ordinary $27 Economy submission with $25 of shipping, a $40 modern book usually has no break-even grade at all — no grade on the scale repays the cost. Is paying to grade worth it?
